The Canteen Refresh: Cafe Tables That Survive Lunch
Every office has one room that works harder than the rest of the building put together, and it is not the boardroom. The canteen feeds the whole team at speed, hosts the birthday cakes, and stands in for everything from team briefings to the Friday quiz. Office canteen furniture takes more punishment than anything else you will buy, so when the room starts to look tired, the refresh deserves ten minutes of proper thought.

Start with the wipe test
Everything in a canteen gets wiped daily, with whatever spray is on the trolley. That rules out anything delicate before you start, and happily, the materials that cope are not the expensive ones. Melamine-faced board shrugs off soup and antibacterial spray; polypropylene can be washed like a plate; PU leather looks like the soft option but wipes clean where fabric would hang on to the smell of Tuesday's curry. Chairs that get out of the way
Stacking is the feature that earns its money every week. Half the value of a canteen is what happens outside mealtimes. The lean test: canteen tables get leant on and dragged about, so favour sturdy bases over spindly ones.
